DPDR is not a “broken personality” or a “loss of identity.”

When the Brain Goes into Power-Saving Mode

Under intense or prolonged stress, the amygdala — the brain’s alarm center — becomes highly active.
It acts like a siren, instantly triggering the “fight or flight” system.
But if the alarm signal doesn’t stop, the brain’s resources start to run low.

In response, the prefrontal cortex — the area responsible for planning, control, and self-awareness — changes its functioning.
Some processes linked to the feeling of “I am here and now” are turned down.
It’s like your phone’s battery saver: background processes shut down to preserve energy for survival.


Disrupted Connections Between Brain Networks

Modern research shows that DPDR alters the balance between major brain networks:

  • Default Mode Network — involved in memories, inner imagery, and the sense of self.
  • Control Network — helps maintain focus and switch between tasks.
  • Sensorimotor Areas — process bodily sensations.

Normally, these networks exchange information in harmony.
In DPDR, the links become “loose”: the inner self-image drifts away from bodily sensations, and perception of the world disconnects from the emotional response to it.


Why Feelings “Turn Off”

Emotional dysregulation in DPDR is not the absence of emotions, but a block on their access to consciousness.
The feelings are still there, but they pass “in the background,” never reaching the level where they feel alive.
It’s a protective mechanism: fewer feelings mean less risk of overload.


What This Means for Recovery

If DPDR is not a breakdown but a protective mode, then recovery is about gently restoring connections between brain networks.
This includes:

  • body-based practices to reconnect with physical sensations;
  • attention to surroundings and details to strengthen the “here and now” sense;
  • gradually expanding the range of emotional responsiveness.

The key is not to “switch yourself back on” by force, but to give your brain a safe environment for returning naturally.
